Slowey hurls gem as Twins blank Brewers

06/29/2008 -
Minneapolis, MN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kevin Slowey pitched his first career
shutout and Delmon Young hit a two-run homer as the Minnesota Twins defeated
the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-0, in the rubber match of a three-game series at the
Metrodome.
Slowey (5-6) surrendered only three hits and struck out eight without
allowing a walk. The 24-year-old righty, has won five of his last eight
starts.
"I think anytime you talk about a pitchers outing, the first batter, first
pitch of the at bat are very important." Slowey said. "I was able to get
through the first couple innings and give our hitters a chance to score, which
they did. It made it a lot easier for me in the middle innings knowing that we
were putting up runs and it would take more than one run to beat us."
Alexi Casilla finished 2-for-4 with an RBI double and Carlos Gomez knocked in
one with a triple as the Twins have now won 11 of their last 12 games.
Ben Sheets (9-2) took the loss, giving up five runs on nine hits, while
striking out seven. It was Sheets' first loss since the middle of May and he
is now 6-1 in 11 road starts this season.
J.J. Hardy, Corey Hart and Mike Cameron accounted for the Brewers only hits.
Milwaukee has lost three of its last four.
Minnesota got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After the first two
hitters went down on strikes, Joe Mauer laced a double to right and Justin
Morneau walked. Jason Kubel then singled to left to plate the first run of the
ball game.
"He's a great pitcher." Mauer said of Sheets. "We faced some pretty good
pitchers the last couple weeks. That's always a real good confidence boost for
this team. It all starts with Kevin Slowey, giving us that great start and we
were able to get to Sheets eventually."
The Twins tacked on another in the fifth when Brian Buscher led off the inning
with a base hit and after the next two batters were retired, came around to
score on a triple by Gomez, giving Minnesota a 2-0 lead.
Young's two-run homer to left in the sixth scored Kubel, who drew a two-out
walk and stretched the Twins advantage to 4-0. A run-scoring double by Casilla
in the seventh, gave the home team a five-run cushion.
The Brewers bats were silent in the eighth and after the Twins failed to score
in the bottom of the frame, Slowey retired the side in order in the ninth.
"He didn't pull any tricks. It's called execusion." Brewers manager Ned Yost
said of Slowey. "Those types of games like that, you just take your hat off.
You got beat. He beat us. He pitched very, very well. There just wasn't much
we could do against him."

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football Week Four betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.
NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.
Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.
Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
