Jays' Halladay silences Seattle bats in 10th career shutout

Baseball Betting Lines

07/01/2008 - Seattle, WA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Roy Halladay threw a four-hitter for his 10th career shutout as the Toronto Blue Jays stymied the Seattle Mariners, 2-0, in the opener of a three-game series.

Halladay (9-6) gave up only four singles, didn't walk a batter and notched six strikeouts in helping the Blue Jays win their third straight game. His last blanking came July 22 last year, also versus Seattle. The righty has won six of his last seven decisions.

Marco Scutaro had two hits, including an RBI single, and Rod Barajas drove in the other run. Scott Rolen had three hits.

R.A. Dickey (2-4) surrendered nine hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings to suffer the loss.

Richie Sexson had two hits for the Mariners, who had their three-game win streak broken in the home debut of new manager Jim Riggleman.

After the game, the Mariners placed starting pitcher Felix Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 24, with a sprained left ankle, and recalled left-handed pitcher Cesar Jimenez from Triple-A Tacoma.

David Eckstein doubled with two outs in the top of the fifth and Scutaro followed with an RBI hit to center.

The Blue Jays padded their lead in the sixth. Vernon Wells singled, and with one out Rolen had a base hit to left. Lyle Overbay walked to load the bases, and Wells scored on Barajas' groundout to shortstop.

Ichiro Suzuki reached base on Eckstein's error in the sixth, but Halladay fanned Jose Lopez and Raul Ibanez in succession to end the inning.

Jeremy Reed and Sexson had back-to-back one out hits in the next inning, but Jeff Clement was caught looking at a third strike, and Kenji Johjima grounded out to finish the frame.
