Cook tosses gem, ends Rockies' eight-game losing streak

07/02/2008 -
Denver, CO (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Aaron Cook pitched a complete game for the first
shut out of his career, and Matt Holliday was the only Rockie with two hits as
Colorado beat San Diego, 4-0, in the middle of a three-game set from Coors
Field.
Cook (11-5) yielded just five hits and struck out four batters for the
Rockies, who saw their eight-game losing streak come to a halt. Garrett Atkins
and Willy Taveras each had a hit and an RBI in the win.
Josh Banks (2-3) took the loss as he gave up four runs and six hits in five
innings.
"It wasn't just his location," Padres catcher Michael Barrett said of Cook.
"It was the velocity, the movement and the relentlessness in the strike zone."
The Rockies jumped on top, 4-0, in the fifth inning. Troy Tulowitzki led the
frame off with a double and moved to third on Cook's sacrifice bunt. Taveras
singled to right, plating the runner, and stole second base. Todd Helton
worked a walk and Taveras took third.
"I was looking for a pitch so I could put the ball in play," Taveras said. "He
(Banks) left a pitch down and away and I hit the ball to right field."
Holliday was issued a free pass before Brad Hawpe grounded into what looked
like a double play. However, Khalil Greene recorded the out at second, but
botched the throw to first, allowing Helton and Taveras to score.
Atkins kept it going with a line drive RBI single to right, and the Rockies
held a 4-0 lead.
Cook got Jody Gerut to ground to second for the first out in the ninth. Edgar
Gonzalez chased the third strike for the second out and Brian Giles flied out
to deep center to seal the deal.
Game Notes
The Rockies eight straight losses matched a season-high skid set from May 26-
June 2 and they are now 33-51 on the year...The Padres managed five hits, none
for extra bases...Cook used just 74 pitches and faced three batters over the
minimum.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.
Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.
El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.
MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds.
Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.
New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.
Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
