Beltre, Silva lead M's past scuffling Padres

Baseball Betting Lines

06/29/2008 - San Diego, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Adrian Beltre finished 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Carlos Silva earned his first win in more than two months, as Seattle topped San Diego, 4-2, in the second contest of a three-game interleague series with the struggling Padres.

Silva (4-9), who had not pitched into the fifth inning in his past two starts, gave up just two runs on eight hits in seven innings, while striking out three for the Mariners, who have won four of five.

Silva had lost his past seven starts, but found good form to take his first win since April 17. Jose Lopez went 2-for-4, while Jeremy Reed had a double and RBI for Seattle.

Cha Seung Baek (1-4), meanwhile, gave up four runs on eight hits in five-plus innings to take the loss for San Diego, which has dropped seven in a row.

Tony Clark singled in a pinch-hit appearance and drove in the Padres' only runs. Khalil Greene and Edgar Gonzalez each collected two hits for San Diego.

After three scoreless innings, Seattle got on the scoreboard first. Lopez led off the fourth with a single, and after two outs, swiped second base. Beltre drove him home with a double to left, while Reed followed by hitting a double to right to plate Beltre, pushing the Mariners' lead to 2-0.

Seattle added another pair of runs in the sixth. Lopez and Raul Ibanez put runners on base with consecutive singles to lead off the frame against Baek. A walk to Jose Vidro loaded the bases, but the San Diego starter remained in the game.

Beltre then hit an infield single to third as Lopez raced home for a three-run Mariners lead, chasing Baek from the game. Bryan Corey entered and got Reed to ground into a force out at home, but Jeff Clement lofted a sacrifice fly to center, plating Vidro for a 4-0 Seattle edge.

Silva went unscathed until the seventh, when the Padres' lineup finally got to him. Singles from Kevin Kouzmanoff and Greene put runners on first and second with one out.

Michael Barrett's ground out advanced the runners, and Clark pinch-hit for Corey. His single to center brought in both runs to bring the Padres within 4-2.

But Silva got Jody Gerut to ground out, ending the frame, and Seattle's bullpen did the rest. Arthur Rhodes tossed a scoreless eighth while Brandon Morrow kept San Diego off the scoreboard in the ninth to nail down his fourth save of the season.

Game Notes
